Kamal Vidya Niketan (KVN) is Kathiwada Foundation’s landmark education project, reimagining rural education to address critical gaps in infrastructure, curriculum, and opportunity. Spread across 1.6 acres of land donated by the trustees, this English-medium school will welcome over 500 students from Kathiwada and neighboring villages, offering a thoughtfully designed campus that blends modern facilities with a biophilic design to create a nurturing environment.

KVN will integrate academic rigour with experiential learning, exposure to diverse perspectives, and create a strong sense of belonging. From spacious classrooms and a makerspace to outdoor sports facilities and programs in environmental sustainability, the school will encourage well-rounded individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to their communities. We want to equip our students with practical skills, confidence and compassion to build fulfilling lives. If successful, this model has the potential to redefine rural education across India.

Aanganwadis are a critical component of India’s public health care system. As part of the Integrated Child Development Services program started by the Indian government in 1975, aanganwadis are village-level child and maternal care centres that ought to provide six services – pre-school learning activities and childhood care, nutrition in the form of a midday meal, immunisation, health check-ups, nutrition and health education and referral services. The purpose of a well-functioning aanganwadi unit is to reduce child hunger and malnutrition. They cater to children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Crucially, aanganwadis are meant to provide contraceptive counseling and supplies. These centres are staffed by aanganwadi workers and helpers drawn ideally from the local community.

Unfortunately, implementation of this central government scheme has largely failed in Madhya Pradesh. Existing aanganwadi centres are woefully inadequate in terms of infrastructure, the quality of meals served, the absence of necessary supplies and trained workers and helpers to run these centres. Kathiwada Foundation will focus on supporting the national aanganwadi program throughout the villages of Kathiwada by deploying CSR funds towards upgrading the infrastructure of existing centres, providing nutritious meals, and bringing in qualified social workers to train aanganwadi workers and helpers. We also want to provide toys, and other early learning supplies for children. We hope that our assistance in running these centres properly and ensuring that they have the necessary resources will inspire local authorities to do the same with the remainder of the centres under their purview.

Teacher training session at the school

The school will play a pivotal role in teacher training not just for teachers at our school. We will work with all teachers in the region to upskill them.

  • SKILL DEVELOPMENT

After-school programs for everyone

Once the Kamal Vidya Niketan school campus is completed, it will serve as a nutrition and healthcare centre for the whole area. More importantly, the school will remain open after school hours to children not enrolled in the school and to adults who have a desire for continuing education.

Based on discussions with the community, we have identified the need for after-school programs in computer literacy, spoken English, accounting classes, financial literacy and coding courses for kids and teens. We will support the local population by providing courses and programs in any areas they see as necessary for their growth and development.

Kathiwada Cricket Ground

Kathiwada Cricket Ground

Kathiwada lacked a communal space where residents could gather, connect, and engage in recreational activities, sports or to simply socialise. In 2013, when villagers approached Digvijay Sinh Kathiwada with a request for a cricket ground, it struck a personal chord. Passionate about sports and cricket, he saw an opportunity to create something transformative for the community: a professional cricket ground.

The former polo grounds of the House of Kathiwada, spanning four acres in the heart of town, were identified as the perfect location for this new third space. However, discussions revealed villagers’ hesitations about transitioning from tennis-ball cricket to playing with leather balls. This insight guided us to provide not just the ground but also training, equipment, clothing, and the necessary infrastructure to fully utilise it. Since its completion in 2014, the cricket ground has become a source of local pride, hosting tournaments and sporting events that draw players and spectators from neighboring villages and towns, proving that few things unite people as effortlessly as the spirit of sport.

Work in progress to upgrade Zone 7

Master plan for the sports club & community centre

The cricket ground built in 2014 is being upgraded and expanded as part of Zone 7 in the Kathiwada 2034 master plan. The donation of an additional 17 acres of land by the trustees will make the cricket ground part of a new sports club and initiative to establish a city centre. The new city centre will be a site for recreation, learning, shopping and leisure.

The existing facility will soon have a pavilion, accommodation for players, a restaurant, light towers for the cricket ground, a parking lot, public toilets, a small market place, a shaded jungle gym for young children, an open-air gym for men, a closed gym for women, a cycling track, a botanical garden, a sculpture court, a clock tower, a museum and more sites for people to commune.

Khel Maha Utsav: A Celebration of Sports and Community

The community comes together for this annual event

Local performances and festivities

A platform for all ages and types of sport

Creating pride of nation through sport

The games go on into the night

What began in 2014 as a modest tennis ball cricket tournament on a newly prepared ground has blossomed into a vibrant ten-day sports festival, drawing thousands of participants and spectators from neighboring villages. The Khel Maha Utsav, held annually around Republic Day, is more than a tournament—it’s a celebration of community and culture.

The festival features a diverse lineup of sports, including cricket, kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, and even archery, with plans to expand into traditional rural games that resonate deeply with local participants. Schoolchildren, young adults, and seasoned players take to the fields with games running all day and by night, kabaddi matches light up the atmosphere under the stars. The energy is infectious with something for everyone at every hour.

Beyond the sports, Khel Maha Utsav is a hub of activity. Food stalls serve as gathering points for conversations, while innovative audience engagement—like boundary-side catching contests—adds a playful dimension. Awards celebrate both athletic achievements and spirited participation.

The grand finale on Republic Day is a true spectacle. Schools from the region come together to perform patriotic songs, dances, and short plays, followed by a vibrant flag-hoisting ceremony. The culmination draws an enthusiastic crowd of 3,000–4,000 people, transcending barriers of caste, gender, and age.

At its heart, the Khel Maha Utsav is more than just a festival; it’s a movement that unites the community through the universal language of sports.

  • HEALTHCARE

Intensive Care Unit

For representation purposes only

Kathiwada residents do not have access to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the event of medical emergencies as a result of accidents, heart attacks, complications from childbirth and other critical care needs. An ICU equipped with technology and medical equipment to manage life-threatening conditions can help professionals intervene on time to increase the likelihood of survival and recovery. It would aid in emergency preparedness in the event of sudden disasters or outbreaks of disease. Currently, residents need to travel long distances for critical care leading to financial and emotional strain on patients and their families.

A local ICU will reduce this burden and improve health equity. It will also serve as a training ground for staff in the region and attract visiting medical professionals to help local doctors focus on preventive care and preparedness for health crises. In 2025, Kathiwada Foundation will start building a modern ICU with a minimum of 5 rooms. In the long-term, the ICU and hospital will be expanded in proportion to the needs of the population. We also want to build a program to attract medical professionals to the OPD clinic.
